I don’t have time to think about Camp

(and two other reasons you’re not signing up)

I have a theory.

You’ve read these emails. You get why camp matters. You’re maybe even a little convinced.

But you haven’t signed your kid up yet. And there’s probably a reason.

Let’s take a few swings.

“I don’t have time”

Fair. You’re busy. Being a parent is hard. It’s time consuming (I am currently in the toddler plus newborn trenches). There’s always something else.

Quick math. Registering for camp takes about 30 minutes, if that. A few clicks, filling in some info, making a payment. Even quicker if you’re a returning family and you want us to do it for you (just email us).

And once you’re registered, that’s it. Summer sorted. A relief. One less thing on your plate.

“It’s a lot of money”

It is. I’m not going to pretend it's not.

But think about what it’s worth to your child. To your family. Not only are you going to get two glorious weeks to yourself (yes, it’s ok to want a break sometimes), your child is also going to essentially do a full semester’s worth of extra-curricular activities in just 14 short days.

This isn’t some random purchase you’re going to regret later. In fact, we can pretty much guarantee you’ll NEVER regret it. You’re making an investment in your child’s future.

“I never went to camp and I don’t really get it”

I hear this one sometimes. And as someone who grew up in England where summer camp isn’t really a thing, I understand this mentality.

I was lucky enough to go on family vacations instead. Or I played with friends, or just hung out at home. But I grew up in a time where travel didn’t cost an arm and a leg, playing outside with friends felt safer, and being inside meant legos and books, not doomscrolling and a lowering self-worth.

But something changes when you go to camp. Whether as a camper, or later in life as a staff member like I did. Camp opens you up to a whole host of endless possibilities.

Camp goes waaaaay beyond just doing a bunch of activities. We offer a safe space for kids to be themselves. We offer independence in a way that kids just don’t get out in the ‘real’ world anymore. We offer a break from their phones and the constant pressure to keep up with the latest trends. We give kids options and choices. We teach them how to make friends, how to solve conflicts. 

We give them a place to call home, a place they belong. Something they want to come back to… just ask our returners.

Still not sure?

That’s okay. Camp isn’t for everyone.

But if you’ve been nodding along to these emails, if you keep thinking, “Yeah I should really be sending my kid to camp”, if you’ve been dreading that long summer just stretching out in front of you…

This is the nudge.
