The Camp Sloane YMCA L.E.A.D. I program, formerly our CLT program, is a TWO-WEEK EXPERIENCE for campers entering 10th grade. This involves a significant amount of individual program for LEAD campers, as well as the fun of traditional camp.

The Camp Sloane YMCA L.E.A.D. II program, formerly our LIT program, is a FOUR-WEEK EXPERIENCE for campers entering 11th grade.

The first two weeks of LEAD II are spent as a group further developing leadership skills, including assisting in activity areas. The second two weeks are spent continuing to assist in activities, and also living in a tent of younger resident campers as an assistant to an experienced, adult counselor.

All our leadership programs at Camp Sloane YMCA contain three core components:

  • Leadership Training: At each step, campers are given both theory and practice to help build their skills as leaders.

  • Camper Participation: Campers in both LEAD I and LEAD II programs attend activity areas to participate and lead younger campers. There are also a number of activities for just their program, including a number of off-site trips.

  • Service Learning: In keeping with our camp motto, “others”, each program selects and completes an on-camp service project each summer.

In all that we do, Camp Sloane YMCA strives for campers and staff to create a caring, nurturing community. Our character is a product of our choices, and all our campers are capable of making quality choices, and discovering the “leader within”. We create a safe environment in which campers make those discoveries by participating in a leadership development sequence with their peers.

Our LEAD program culminates in the third year, when campers are eligible to make the transition from campers to staff and become Junior Counselors as they enter their 12th grade year. Note: The Junior Counselor position requires a separate application and interview. LEAD Program participants are not guaranteed a position as a Junior Counselor upon completion of the LEAD program.

Our LEAD programs are selective. LEAD is designed around the camper who truly wants to develop their “leader within”, as well as filling an increasingly important role as a leader in our Camp Family. For those that desire these goals, the LEAD program can be a significant milestone on the path from child to young adult.
